Huawei Honor Cube WS831 Wireless 802.11ac Router

Recently, we tested several Huawei home routers. The powerful platforms and attractive price are interesting. However, the software can not always satisfy demanding users.

Huawei WS831 Wireless Router

In this article we look at the router Huawei Honor Cube WS831, which also has a second name “Honor Cube” in some sources.

This Honor Cube model has wired ports 100 Mbit/s (one WAN and two LAN), two wireless access points in the 2.4 and 5 GHz, and it supports the current protocol 802.11ac, and is equipped with a USB 2.0 port for connecting external storage devices.

In testing, we used the unlocated devices, so it was difficult to find even English letters on the box and in the instructions and in the web interface. Provided that this model is not on the manufacturer’s website, and not even any documents, it is possible that we will miss some of the features of the device.

Huawei WS831 Wireless Router

Packing router has an almost cubic shape and unusual celadon. No technical information on it, apparently, except for references to a faster processor, support for 802.11ac and company management utilities for mobile devices.

The package includes the router power supply 5.1 V 2.1 A flat Gigabit Ethernet patch cable, a brief description, a warranty card and, as a bonus, the calendar for this year.

The body of the router is made of white glossy plastic. Its dimensions are 90 × 90 × 94 mm. The top cover is printed the name of the series – Honor.

On the edge, the slit are passive ventilation. The second group of holes can be seen in the lower part of the housing.

On the front side is a button «Hi» with chrome rim and a built-in multi-color display, which probably used to connect wireless clients on technology WPS, and reset (with a long press).

All connectors are assembled on the rear panel – input power supply, one port WAN, LAN port and two port USB 2.0. Turn the power of this model is not provided.

The bottom of the selected gray matte is plastic. Based housing has two large rubber inserts that hold it firmly on a flat surface. But you can not fix this model on the wall. There is also a sticker with information about the device, where you can find the wireless network name by default, MAC- and IP-address, serial number and other data.

The main processor unit can be found labeled “5650”. The network has information about the fact that he is a SoC HiSilicon SD5650H with a pair of ARM-cores running at 1 GHz. Given the absence of heat sinks on the chip, and the use of wired ports only at 100 Mbit/s, it is hard to believe in these characteristics. The RAM of the device is 128 MB, and has 16 MB of flash memory for firmware. The Fast Ethernet controller for network is built into the main processor.

The model is equipped with two radio blocks: Realtek RTL8192ER responsible for 802.11b/g/n 2.4GHz, and Realtek RTL8812AE for 802.11a/n/ac 5 GHz. Both chips use a configuration of two MIMO antennas that gives the maximum connection speed of 300Mbit/s and 876 Mbit/s, respectively. On the radio blocks, there are no radiators. Antennas are built-in in the model and are on opposite inner walls of the body.

Huawei E5730 – 42Mbps MiFi Router with LAN Connector

If you had read our blogs about introducing the Huawei E5730, you may get to know some features of Huawei E5730. The new Huawei E5730 MiFi router is not an ordinary mobile hotspot: the device has a LAN port and a 5200 mAh battery besides mobile hotspots. On one hand, the E5730s hotspot can thus be used for devices that do not have Wi-Fi feature, on the other hand users have also a mobile battery (“Power Bank”) the same time. Then users can charge the smartphones, tablets when the power is around off.  However, the small pocket router Huawei E5730 is not perfect, because it can’t support the LTE frequency bands.

DC-HSPA+ up to 42 Mbit/s
Inside the Huawei E5730, a Huawei subsidiary HiSilicon modem is inserted, which allows speeds of up to 42.2 Mbit/s in the downlink and 5.76 Mbit/s in the uplink. However, these are gross data rates, the real values can’t reach this speeds. Under a little congested UMTS cell, the top speed may achieve about 30Mbit/s. Another important feature of Huawei E5730 is that a maximum of 10 wireless devices to the router can be connected simultaneously.
Since UMTS is supported only on the frequency bands around 900 and 2100 megahertz, you’d better to use the Huawei E5730 in Europe, even though it can use in other areas, but usually limited in America. What’s more, the slow quad-band GPRS/EDGE (850/900/1800/1900 MHz) is supported. Unfortunately, unlike the predecessors Huawei E587 and E5756, there is no connector for an external antenna in Huawei E5730, so the transmission power cannot be improved if the signal is weak.

A special feature of the Huawei E5730 provides a LAN and a USB port.

Easy charging other devices
Another special feature is the full-size USB port on the side of the Huawei E5730 next to the LAN port. This allows easy charging of other devices such as smart phones via the integrated 5200 mAh battery in the E5730.The output is 5V/2A, so that almost all mobile companions should be easily charged. Of course you can use hotspot runtime for much longer time based on the strong battery in Huawei E5730, because with a fully charged, Huawei E5730s can provides an operating time of at least 16 hours according to the manufacturer!

The operation of Huawei E5730 is via a web interface in the browser, which is connected to the router. Alternatively, an administration via Huawei Mobile WiFi app is also possible; this program is available for all devices with Apple iOS or Google Android operating system. The Huawei E5730 is now available in the color white and gold commercially without SIM lock on www.4gltemall.com . If you feel interested in this new mobile pocket router, welcome to check more details of it.

Huawei E5330 – New Cheap 3G Mobile WiFi Hotspot

As a new mobile WiFi hotspot (‘MiFi router “) on the market, Huawei E5330 is available since a few weeks ago. With a retail price of around 90USD, the E5330 is one of the best devices in this type. As the successor to Huawei E5220, Huawei E5330 can offer better performance. The Huawei E5330 is available in black and white colors and offers up to 10 wireless devices easy access to the mobile Internet. The maximum speed is 21.6 Mbit/s. During use on the HSPA+/UMTS network, the real speed would be possibly achieved up to 16 Mbit/s. In the following, we present you more detail about the new budget pocket WiFi Huawei E5330.

Small dimensions and replaceable battery
Comparing with the predecessor, the Huawei E5330 is quite small with size of 92.8 x 60 x 14.4 millimeters, making it one of the most compact UMTS mobile hotspots. On the front, you will find 5 LEDs that light up in green and display the operating status of wireless, network strength and battery. It also indicates whether a new message has arrived and of course whether the Huawei E5330 is enabled. If you would expect a display like more expensive hotspots such as the Huawei E5372, it’s a picty that E5330 don’t have this feature. This also makes E5330 in low production cost and good sale price.

With the 1500 mAh large battery, Huawei E5330 hotspot is intended to create an operating time of about 6 hours. The standby time is 300 hours. The battery is easily replaceable for the user, so you also can take more battery when no charger is available on longer trips.

The back of the Huawei E5330 can be changed and removed the battery.

HSPA+ with up to 21.6 Mbit/s
Here now you can see the good price on 4gltemall.com , it’s SIM unlocked without any contract. The Huawei E5330 is very convenient; however, it does not support the latest mobile technologies, such as LTE, DC-HSPA+. Thus, a maximum of 21.6 Mbit/s could be reached via HSPA+, while some customer required the double speed of 42mbps, even more 100mbps on LTE networks. The connection to the E5330 terminals via Wi-Fi, the integrated radio module in the Huawei E5330 transmits in the 2.4 GHz band (Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n) and achieved gross data rates of up to 72 Mbit/s. Since only the frequency bands around 900 and 2100 MHz are supported in UMTS mode, the Huawei E5330 is suitable for use mainly in Europe and Asia.

If you need the comfort features such as a connector for an external antenna for improved reception, or a MicroSD slot to share files, you have to forget the Huawei E5330. Huawei E5330 has no antenna connector and SD slot. The establishment and operation, either directly on the browser via the web interface or via the Huawei Mobile WiFi app, which is available for Android and iOS. The Huawei E5330 is available now  without a contract and without lock in the trade, next to the router there is a USB charger, a USB cable and a Quick Start Guide included.

There is a plastic stick to seal the box, after cut it, we can pull out the Huawei E5730s in the center. There is a transparent plastic bag to protect the body of E5730s from scratch.

When you use this hotspot, it’s better to write down the password and then connect via this WiFi key. But we didn’t find the MicroSD card slot, so the E5730s would not support extendable storage.

There are alao the IMEI number, certificate number and model number of E5730S. We found the model number is also E5730s-2. The name is similar to Huawei E5331, the E5331s-2 is the model to support UMTS 900/2100MHz. Beside the SIM card slot, there ia the hole for reset, this is the button to set the device to facory default. User can use it when forgetting the password or want new quick setup.

It’s said the E5730s-2 could work for 16 hours. If so, it will solve the battery shortage problem. And as the backup function, it can work as power bank which can help the electronics in pocket such as iPhone, iPad, Tablets to get power support. What’s more, the Huawei E5730s can provide the download speed up to 42mpbs on DC-HSPA+ technology.  And up to 10 WiFi users could share the internet access. With the small size like a credit card, the Huawei E5730s is really a good mobile WiFi worthy to have one in pocket or outdoor.

Huawei E5220 HSPA+ WLAN Router Test

Huawei E5220 Mobile Wi-Fi hotspot is a small mobile pocket router that can forward the UMTS internet connection via WiFi for up to 10 devices simultaneously. In comparison with other portable Wi-Fi hotspots, we will soon find out that the Huawei E5220 without contract belongs to the best devices of its kind. With the low weight of only 66 grams and dimensions of 90 mm x 56 mm x 14.4 mm, Huawei E5220 is a unique mobile hotspot. And the price of Huawei E5220 is good, so how does the price affect the performance? Let’s have a look at the result of HUAWEI E5220 test.

HSPA+ up to 21.6 Mbit/s
Following the Huawei E5 series, Huawei E5220 also works both in GSM network and the UMTS network, LTE is not supported. In the UMTS network, the download speed of up to 21.6 Mbit/s via HSPA+ is available, of course, it depends on the configuration and utilization of the network. In the test, we use the HUAWEI E5220 under the Vodafone network, a maximum speed of 14 Mbit/s downstream and 3.3 Mbit/s upstream; while with the network of Deutsche Telekom, the speeds 4.2 Mbit/s for downstream and 4.1 Mbit/s for Upstream were possible. The ping times were at 35 – 80 milliseconds over UMTS, depending on network and usage. The usable frequency bands are the 900 and 2100 megahertz with UMTS/HSPA+, and 850/900/1800/1900 MHz for GSM/EDGE.

Four status LEDs on the front panel next to the Power button indicate the current operating status. Further information can be obtained only through the web UI of Huawei E5220, more on that. The connection to the computer via Wi-Fi in the 2.4 GHz band, up to 72 MBit/s is supported (Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n). Even if you are not too far from the router, the full 72 Mbit/s WLAN connection speed can’t come true at the terminal.

Only 3 hours battery life

The size of HUAWEI E5220 is very slim and in pocket size. The battery of Huawei E5220 removable and the capacity is only 1150 mAh, so in the test, the working time only lasts just under 3 hours at use in the train and at stationary use. On the other hand , the expensive 4G Mobile devices like the Huawei E5776  offer up to 10 hours. Positive note, the battery is easily replaceable and can therefore be replaced with a defect without effort.

The operation of the Huawei E5220 hotspots is normally done via a web interface in the browser. There, next to the SIM pin, for example, network technology (automatic, 2G only, 3G only) or the provider could be selected. Information is also available about data volume and the online time. For smartphones and tablets with the Android operating system or iOS, an app is also available, which also presents the most common settings and information.

Conclusion: simple mobile WiFi hotspot
After the test, one thing is certain: Those who seeks extras like an external antenna port or a slot for memory cards, the Huawei E5220 is definitely wrong model because E5220 has not the external antenna connector and the SD card slot. But for those who want to surf high speed on UMTS, not LTE, Huawei E5220 is definitely worth a look: price, size and weight are unbeaten so far, as well as our Pocket WiFi column shows.

Here now, Huawei E5220 is already branded for the operator Vodafone, the model number is Vodafone R206. If you want the branded E5220, Vodafone R206 is a good option for you.
