How to update the firmware of Huawei E5786

Huawei E5786 is world’s first LTE mobile hotspot with LTE Advanced Cat6 and WLAN ac, and it’s one of the fastest mobile LTE router on the market. Thanks to good facilities and powerful battery, Huawei E5786 is popular with many users. However, there is also a small problem with the device, which annoys some users recently.

Huawei has announced the E5786 in February 2014 with the so-called WiFi Extender feature, a feature that we already know from many other Huawei MiFi routers. However, Huawei provides the appliance with different firmware versions, in which some of the WiFi Extender is disabled. In this article, I want to show how to flash the firmware of Huawei E5786 to the version which is equipped with the WiFi Extender.

On some forums, we has found a firmware for the Huawei E5786 LTE router, a user who has already integrated the WiFi Extender function. The firmware should be OK with both the original Huawei E5786 and the unit from Germany Telekom (Telekom Speedbox LTE mini II ), at least there are already reports from users who have their device successfully updated to version 21.303.07.00.00. If one has a E5786 with telecom brand, after the flash, you will get a new firmware with no more branding. Below are the procedure how to update the firmware:

  1. download the Huawei E5786 new firmware zip and unzip all programs on PC
  2. Connect Router with USB cable and at least 10% battery(Better more !!)
  3. Starting the firmware .exe file with admin rights and follow the instructions
  4. also flash GUI. exe

After about 5 minutes of process, the flash should be completed. Some devices may require a Pin code to flash, it can be generated using IMEI number on relevant websites – here you should try Google shortly. I personally have no customized E5786 with telecom brand to test, but in the above linked LTE Forum, there are some opinions that are positive, so I decided to publish the guide here. Nevertheless:

Warning: After flashing the firmware, you lose any warranty.
we have no liability for damage to the device.

Huawei Honor Cube WS831 Wireless 802.11ac Router

Recently, we tested several Huawei home routers. The powerful platforms and attractive price are interesting. However, the software can not always satisfy demanding users.

Huawei WS831 Wireless Router

In this article we look at the router Huawei Honor Cube WS831, which also has a second name “Honor Cube” in some sources.

This Honor Cube model has wired ports 100 Mbit/s (one WAN and two LAN), two wireless access points in the 2.4 and 5 GHz, and it supports the current protocol 802.11ac, and is equipped with a USB 2.0 port for connecting external storage devices.

In testing, we used the unlocated devices, so it was difficult to find even English letters on the box and in the instructions and in the web interface. Provided that this model is not on the manufacturer’s website, and not even any documents, it is possible that we will miss some of the features of the device.

Huawei WS831 Wireless Router

Packing router has an almost cubic shape and unusual celadon. No technical information on it, apparently, except for references to a faster processor, support for 802.11ac and company management utilities for mobile devices.

Huawei WS831 Wireless Router

The package includes the router power supply 5.1 V 2.1 A flat Gigabit Ethernet patch cable, a brief description, a warranty card and, as a bonus, the calendar for this year.

Huawei WS831 Wireless Router

The body of the router is made of white glossy plastic. Its dimensions are 90 × 90 × 94 mm. The top cover is printed the name of the series – Honor.

On the edge, the slit are passive ventilation. The second group of holes can be seen in the lower part of the housing.

Huawei WS831 Wireless Router

On the front side is a button «Hi» with chrome rim and a built-in multi-color display, which probably used to connect wireless clients on technology WPS, and reset (with a long press).

All connectors are assembled on the rear panel – input power supply, one port WAN, LAN port and two port USB 2.0. Turn the power of this model is not provided.

Huawei WS831 Wireless Router

The bottom of the selected gray matte is plastic. Based housing has two large rubber inserts that hold it firmly on a flat surface. But you can not fix this model on the wall. There is also a sticker with information about the device, where you can find the wireless network name by default, MAC- and IP-address, serial number and other data.

The main processor unit can be found labeled “5650”. The network has information about the fact that he is a SoC HiSilicon SD5650H with a pair of ARM-cores running at 1 GHz. Given the absence of heat sinks on the chip, and the use of wired ports only at 100 Mbit/s, it is hard to believe in these characteristics. The RAM of the device is 128 MB, and has 16 MB of flash memory for firmware. The Fast Ethernet controller for network is built into the main processor.

Huawei WS831 Wireless Router

The model is equipped with two radio blocks: Realtek RTL8192ER responsible for 802.11b/g/n 2.4GHz, and Realtek RTL8812AE for 802.11a/n/ac 5 GHz. Both chips use a configuration of two MIMO antennas that gives the maximum connection speed of 300Mbit/s and 876 Mbit/s, respectively. On the radio blocks, there are no radiators. Antennas are built-in in the model and are on opposite inner walls of the body.

Battery for mobile use

The Huawei E5170 is primarily intended for stationary use, ie for example as a substitute for a DSL connection. However, unlike other stationary LTE routers, the E5170 is divided into two parts: There is the router part of the wireless technology with an integrated battery and there is the docking station. The latter includes not only the battery but also offers an RJ-45 LAN port to connect a desktop computer. Between Router and dock, the LED lighting has a unique design.

If you want to use the Huawei E5170 mobile use without external power supply, according to the manufacturer, the integrated 1500 mAh battery could provide for an operating time of more than one hour. Thus, the device is also ideally suited for regions where often fails the power. In our view, the capacity would not be enough for long time run. Rather, it is more likely to provide emergency internet service.

Fast Internet over LTE

Thanks to support for LTE category 4, the Huawei E5170 can reach speeds of up to 150 Mbit/s downstream and 50 Mbit/s upstream. But the built-in modem can do even more: If no LTE network is available, UMTS+ is used with the data accelerator DC-HSPA+, so that up to 42.2 Mbit/s in the downlink are possible. Reception may need an external LTE antenna to be strengthened, the necessary connections are integrated directly in the device.

Wi-Fi for up to 32 users

Many LTE router with battery, which are designed for mobile use, can connect up to 10 devices simultaneously via Wi-Fi. LTE Cat4 and DC-HSPA+

The centerpiece of the Huawei E5373 is a cellular modem HiSilicon, a subsidiary of manufacturer Huawei. The modem supports all important for Europe frequency bands and allows data rates of up to 150 Mbit/s downstream and 50 Mbit/s upstream depending on the network. In practice, however, the rate could usually be well below the maximum. If LTE network is unavailable, the modem supports both GSM and UMTS networks, the two older wireless technologies. In the UMTS network, it also allows up to 42.2 Mbit s download and 5.76 Mbit/s upload speed if the data accelerator DC-HSPA+ are used.

On the body side of Huawei E5373, you can find two connections for an external antenna. The connector type is TS-9. When the device is in low data rates or unstable Internet connection, an external antenna is recommended. The two connectors are hidden under a cover.

Dual Band WLAN

Up to 10 units can connect to the E5373 LTE router simultaneously via WLAN. Another device may also take advantage of the Internet connection via the microUSB connector and the cable supplied. The manufacturer Huawei has opted for a module, which can send and receive both at 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. The 5 GHz band is particularly useful when the frequency range is overloaded on 2.4 GHz, which may often happen on large-scale events or in a residential area with many local residents.

6 hours operating time

The Huawei E5373 has a battery with a capacity of 1500 mAh. The energy storage unit is easily replaceable by the user, so if necessary, you can buy a second battery to extend the operating time. According to Huawei, one can expect a runtime of up to 6 hours of continuous operation, then the battery needs to be charged through the microUSB connector again.

Availability and price

Now the Huawei E5373 is available on www.4gltemall.com .The price is in budget without a contract. In the mobile operators in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, the LTE router is not available, so you should look around when necessary for a separate data plan with a provider of their choice. Huawei E5373 can work well with almost all network provides in Europe, if you usually travel or go outdoor, it’s a good partner!
