Netgear Aircard 800s (Optus 4G WiFi Modem AC800s) Released

You may know the Netgear Aircard 810s, which had been available since the beginning of 2017. And now the more advanced Netgear Nighthawk M1 MR1100 is also available in the market. They are hot 4G mobile routers for LTE network, especially LTE advanced network. Today, we would like to recommend a new 4G pocket WiFi – Netgear Aircard 800s.

The Netgear Aircard 800s is firstly introduced to Australian network provider Optus and named it Optus 4G Wi-Fi Modem (Cat 9) AC800S. From the name, we get to know it’s a product that’s in the lower level than Netgear 810S. Since Netgear Aircard 810s supports LTE category 11, the Optus 4G WiFi Modem AC800S supports only LTE category 9. So it can’t compare to Nighthawk M1, which supports LTE-A pro networks.



Following the classical design of the Netgear 4G Aircards, the AC800S 4G WiFi modem also has a 2.4” QVGA capacitive LCD touchscreen, where users can conveniently monitor your data usage, and manage device and network settings. For advanced features and remote management, you’ll have access to a free NETGEAR mobile app.

Two connectors for external 3G/4G LTE Antennas are at the bottom side of the Aircard 800s. They are covered by two caps, slip to see the connectors and cover. The Optus logo is located at the lower edge of the front. A home and back button on the screen for operation.


The battery of the Optus 4G WiFi modem 800s is removable and the capacity is 2930mAh, which is the same as Aircard 810s. Netgear remains the Jump Boost feature on the new Aircard 800s like Netgear AC810S, which means users can charge their smartphones or other small USB devices while the WiFi modem works. The powerful battery lasts up to 11 hours of continuous use. Simply plug it into the hotspot’s jump boost cable and start boosting from the touchscreen or the hotspot web page.

Technical Specifications

Optus 4G Wi-Fi Modem (Cat 9) AC800S features support for Category 9 LTE and 3-band Carrier Aggregation, with the ability to achieve theoretical download speeds of 450 Mbps. Since the LTE develops to Advanced or Advanced Pro, the typical product Aircard 810s supports LTE Cat11 with download speed to 600Mbps and the latest one Nighthawk M1 supports even 1Gbps for download. However, the Optus AC800S is enough for most cases in daily use. With Qualcomm MDM9240, the Optus 4G WiFi modem could support LTE FDD Band 1, 3, 7, 28, 40. It can support up to 15 wireless devices to access internet simultaneously.

Netgear AC800S also increases network performance and reduce interference with 802.11ac and Dual-Band WiFi band (2.4 GHz/5 GHz). Like its predecessors, the AC800S is small size with dimensions of 110 (L) x 68 (W) x 16.1 (H) mm. User can easily take it in pocket or handbag for outdoor activities.


From the appearance the specifications, we can conclude the Optus 4G WiFi modem is a good 4G Pocket WiFi, even though it’s not configured with the most advanced technology. But for most users, it’s enough for daily use. It keeps the typical design and practical features of the Netgear 4G Aircards. We would take further test about the performance for data rates in near future.

Samsung Presents LTE Cat.18 Modem with 6CA Support

Samsung has introduced a LTE Advanced Pro modem for use in the Exynos chipset series, which is expected to achieve up to 1.2 Gbit/s in the downlink thanks to carrier aggregation, 4 × 4 MIMO and 256QAM technologies. The modem works with LTE category 18 and should be next to the Qualcomm Snapdragon X20, the first modem to provide such high speeds. The market for mobile radio modems is shared by a few large manufacturers, such as Qualcomm and Samsung, Intel, Mediatek and HiSilicon (Huawei).

In Europe, LTE of category 12 is currently being used (mid 2017), which corresponds to speeds of approximately 500 MBit/s at Vodafone. However, the development proceeds rapidly, the 3GPP Release 13 has also defined the LTE category 18 Downlink, which enables up to 1.2 GBit/s. The high data rates can be achieved by an extended antenna technology (4 × 4 MIMO) and by a better modulation (256QAM). Some of the features defined in 3GPP Release 13 are also advertised as LTE Advanced Pro, which is a further development of LTE Advanced.



First 6CA modem

According to Samsung, the new modem is the first LTE modem that can bundle up to 6 frequency bands simultaneously (6CA). Other hitherto available high-end modems can be a maximum of 5CA, many chipsets built in current mid-class smartphones can only 2CA or 3CA. In addition to 6CA, 256QAM and 4 × 4 MIMO, the Samsung Modem supports eLAA (enhanced Licensed Assisted Access), ie the use of unlicensed radio spectrum. For future applications, it is conceivable that network operators also use radio spectrum, which has so far mainly been used for WLAN (5 GHz range). Initial tests have shown that parallel operation of LAA and WLAN is possible without problems.

Use in the Galaxy S9?

The new Samsung LTE modem will go into mass production from the end of 2017 and is expected to be used in 2018 in new high-end devices with Samsung Exynos chipset. For the Samsung Galaxy Note 8, which is expected in August 2017, this is, of course, too late, but possibly we will see the Samsung LTE Cat18 modem in the Galaxy S9, which is expected to be released in spring 2018.

The Samsung Galaxy A3 has been popular in many countries for some time now, it is one of the very few small and handy Android smartphones with current equipment. What used to be the “mini-versions” of the big Galaxy S models today is the Galaxy A3 series, because a Galaxy S7 mini or a Galaxy S8 mini does not exist. With its 4.7-inch display and quite compact dimensions, the Galaxy A3 is well-suited for single-handed operation. In February, Samsung has already launched the third generation of the A series on the market, the Galaxy A3 (2017). In the test, the device will show whether it is as recommendable as its predecessors.


The 2017 version of the Samsung Galaxy A3 comes considerably more rounded than the 2016 version. The Galaxy A3 (2016) is almost more modern compared to the Galaxy A3 (2017), although it is a generation older. Samsung provides a very high level of materials and processing, in the A3 (2017) front and rear made of glass and a matt metal frame. Speaking of color: Samsung sells the Galaxy A3 (2017) in the colors sky- black, sand-gold, blue-mist and cloud-peach, or simply black, gold, blue and pink.

The dimensions are 135.4 x 66.2 x 7.9 millimeters and the A3 is 138 grams heavier. The back is rounded to the sides, so that the device is comfortable in the hand. The display glass is also slightly rounded (2.5D glass). On the right is the power button, on the left are the two volume buttons. All buttons provide a very good pressure point. At the bottom of the device is a USB Type C connector, as well as the 3.5mm audio connector and a microphone. The second microphone for noise suppression is placed on the top, where you can also find the slot for the Nano SIM card and the optional MicroSD memory card. On the front you can find the home button, which also has a fingerprint sensor integrated.

In addition to the Samsung Galaxy A3 (2017), there is also a white plug-in power supply (without quick-charging function), a white USB to USB type C cable for charging and data transmission, and a simple headset, also in white. In addition to the usual paperwork, there is also a small tool for opening the SIM card slot.


Hardware and software

The display of the Samsung Galaxy A3 (2017) is 4.7 inches in the diagonal (16: 9 aspect ratio). The resolution is no longer quite modern with 1280 x 720 pixels (HD), but in the daily use does not disturb and there are still advantages such as the good maximum brightness and the accurate color representation. Only in direct comparison with a full-HD smartphone, the low pixel density is negative. The comparatively low resolution benefits the battery runtime: the Galaxy A3 (2017) with its 2.350 mAh strong battery runs for 2 days with normal use in any case, with little use probably even longer. And the battery cannot be changed.


Samsung has provided a 1.6 GHz Octa core processor for the Galaxy A3 (2017), which has 2 GB of RAM (RAM) available. The internal user memory is very narrow with 16 GB, especially since only about 10 gigabytes are available for free. Luckily, you can use MicroSD memory card for memory upgrade.

The Samsung Galaxy A3 (2017) supports WLAN according to the standards 802.11a/b/g/n/ac to 2.4 GHz and even to 5GHz, which is great for a smartphone for entry class. Also NFC and Bluetooth 4.2 are on board, as well as the support for various satellite navigation systems. LTE is supported on all frequency bands that are important for Europe (800, 850, 900, 1800, 1900, 2100, 2300 and 2600 MHz). The device is also well suited for occasional travel to other continents.

As an operating system, Android is used in version 6.0.1, an update to Android 7.0 seems to be currently under development and is likely to reach the Galaxy A3 (2017) in any case. The user interface is appealing and offers a lot of settings. In addition, the test proved positive that the system reacts very quickly and opens apps quickly. For the first set-up, it is best to schedule a few minutes more to configure the phone as your preference, as some menus are deeply hidden in the settings.


The Always On Display was particularly good in the test. This was introduced in 2016 with the Galaxy S7 and is now also available in Galaxy A series. If the display is switched off, the time and some additional information such as received WhatsApp messages are displayed. Thanks to AMOLED display technology, the energy consumption is very limited, in the test it was about 10% per 24 hours.


In the camera, Samsung uses a 13 megapixel sensor, which operates at full resolution in the 4: 3 aspect ratio. If you prefer the 16: 9 format, a maximum of 9.6 megapixels are available. The aperture is up to f1.9 and an autofocus as well as an LED flash is also available. Videos are available in full HD 1080p. The front camera offers 8 megapixels and also f1.9 aperture. The image quality of the back camera is good, but not outstanding. In good light, the recordings are very nice, especially macro pictures can be seen. In dark environments, the image quality of the camera is not quite as good, but still adequate and the price is definitely appropriate.

Conclusion: Recommended!

Samsung has consistently developed the Galaxy A3 in the 2017 version. The high-quality materials and the good workmanship are particularly impressive. Also the performance of the smartphone was very good in the test, the operation worked just as smoothly as with much more expensive upper-class smartphones. Good, but not outstanding are the camera and the display quality to evaluate. Overall, the Samsung Galaxy A3 (2017) is highly recommended. The price-performance ratio is great; you can get a handy and compact Android smartphone at a fair price!

Netgear AirCard 785s Mobile LTE Router Test

The Netgear AirCard 785s is a small mobile LTE hotspot router, which could be used on holiday or traveling. With the Aircard 785s, smartphones and tablets as well as laptops can easily connect to the Internet. Up to 15 wireless-enabled devices can be powered via the AC785S LTE router to the Internet. We have subjected the Aircard 785s on the road to a test. The device is simultaneously dual-band and WLAN n-capable .Per LTE Cat. 4, the speeds of up to 150 Mbit/s are supported in the downstream.

Netgear Aircard 785s comes with the dimensions 109.9 x 68.9 x 14.6 millimeters and weighing 127 grams, and is therefore compact and lightweight. The processing of the mobile hotspot is impeccable, we found no sharp edges. In addition, the design is appealing: Because on the front is a triangular design element installed, behind which the rectangular display hides. While Netgear sets the front and back of the AirCard 785s in the color of black, the plastic frame is kept in metal optics. The back cover is removable, so as the battery of 2000 mAh capacity, which covers the SIM card slot. Inserting the SIM card was smooth, but the removal is not easy due to the design. We also spend more power than expected when removing the battery. On the lower side a respective antenna connectors are left and right integrated. In the middle of antenna connectors, the Micro-USB port is located.

Installation and Setup


After the SIM card plugged into Aircard 785s, we first had to connect the device to a power source, so that we could start the mobile hotspot, because the AC785S came with an empty battery. Then the user has to select the language via the display. The menu navigation is not via touch screen, but with two buttons that are located on the upper side of the frame (facing the display). While the left button works for the confirmation of entry, as the on and off button is the right button to navigate to the next item. Note: If you inserted a different micro-SIM card into the device, the mobile hotspot from Netgear must be restarted.

So runs the Aircard 785s: First of all, WiFi in the smartphone or laptop must be enabled and are searching for the Netgear hotspot on the device. This shows then NTGRFAC6. The network generated is then selected and Security Key must be entered, which is displayed on the display of the Netgear 785s, also named password of the LTE router. The device worked without problems in our test and is likely to be implemented quickly for everyone. Overall user interface for the various settings in the 785 Aircard router is designed very clear and easy to understand. The design is simple and not too cluttered. In the menu, “WLAN” can be edited under “Connect” the main and secondary wireless network. The master and guest WLAN can be configured under “Options”. Here the encryption, the 2.4-GHz or 5-GHz frequency band and the number of allowable WLAN devices are adjustable. Users will have the ability to assign a certain number of devices the master and guest Wi-Fi. The final point is the Mac filter mode: Here appliances a blacklist or whitelist or no list can be assigned.

Display and status indicator


Over the 4.5-centimeter screen of Netgear AC785S, the user can see the status information for 4G/3G network, the wireless connection, the battery life and can set up basic wireless configurations and set an alarm and notification function. However, user may not expect too much from the screen resolution. On the LCD screen, at the top of the display, it indicates signal strength, 4G, data transfer and the wireless network. Among the current battery status, it also indicates the number of users connected to the mobile hotspot AC785S and the status of the consumed data volume.

First experiences in operation


In operation, the Netgear AirCard 785s looks good and comes on a single charge for about 6 hours and 30 minutes in our test. And the Aircard 785 can keep continuous operation of a battery life of up to 8 hours. The posting the individual devices via the LTE router worked fine and fast. The assignment of the number of connected devices has been well implemented by the netgear 785s in our test. According to the Netgear official specs, it could support up to 15 wireelss devices, we tested only 10 users. Nevertheless, it is still a useful companion in the mobile LTE router. Especially on holiday or at a meeting in the park with a few friends, the Aircard 785 has proven to be extremely helpful in our testing.

The small mobile LTE router Netgear AirCard 785s has a nice design and is easy to configure via a web browser or via app for iOS, Android and Amazon devices. However, the display cannot be operated by finger touch. In addition, a battery with more capacity would be desirable, especially for users who travel a lot, are on vacation at the beach or professionally have multiple wireless devices in his luggage. Anyhow, it’s good pocket WiFi router for 4G networks.

Huawei Presents P9 Series Smartphone

Huawei today unveiled the P9 series at a press event in London. This includes two smartphones Huawei P9 and Huawei P9 Plus. The devices, which can be seen already from the name, are the direct successor of the Huawei P8 series. A highlight of Huawei P9, is the camera; Huawei works with Leica together and relies on a combination of two cameras on the back panel.


Huawei P9

The Huawei P9 comes with a 5.2 inch full HD display (1920 x 1080 pixels) and has pre-installed operating system Android 6 marshmallow together EMUI interface. The internal memory is 32 gigabytes in size, an expansion via MicroSD card is possible. The RAM is 3GB and the processor is a HiSilicon Kirin 955 octa-core for use (in the Huawei Mate 8 , the predecessor was still Kirin 950 installed). The LTE modem supports 18 different frequency ranges and is therefore also suitable for international use. WLAN is supported on 2.4 Ghz and 5 GHz.


The Huawei P9 has a metal body which is to be very thin with 6.95 millimeters. The battery is 3,000 mAh strong and not changeable, charging via a USB Type C port. On the back of Huawei P9, you can see the two camera lenses immediately and the Leica logo. The camera has a resolution of 12 megapixels and a f2.2 aperture. Under the camera, the fingerprint sensor is visible. The Huawei P9 comes available in mid-April 2016 on the market, the retail price varies depends on the specifications without contract. The golden color version is initially exclusively at Vodafone available on the open market and for other providers the colors Titanium Grey and Mystic Silver offered.



Huawei P9 Plus

Netgear Mobile 4G LTE Hotspots

Netgear has now attained a permanent place among the manufacturers of mobile LTE hotspots after purchasing the terminal division of Sierra Wireless. Currently there are three MiFi routers from American manufacturers: the models AirCard 785s, 790S and 810S. The three devices have different good performance and are available now different network providers worldwide. At the MWC 2016 in Barcelona, there was the possibility of all three units together to compare.

The mobile LTE hotspots of Netgear all have an integrated multimode cellular modem, so they allow the use of all current mobile technologies. In 3G UMTS, the DC-HSPA+ technology is available for up to 42.2 Mbit/s in the downlink and up to 5.76 Mbit/s in the uplink. There are differences between the three devices at the maximum speed for LTE.



The Netgear AirCard 785s Hotspot supports LTE category 4 with up to 150 Mbit/s in the downlink and use up to 50 Mbit/s in the uplink, making it the slowest of the three routers. With LTE Cat6 up to 300 MBit/s in downlink, the supported download speed of Netgear AC790S is twice as fast on the go , but it must be with the appropriate tariff and a suitably equipped network. In the uplink, the AirCard 790S also provides up to 50 Mbit/s. The fastest in the three devices is the Netgear AC810S. It can support LTE-Advanced Cat11 up to 600 Mbit/s in the downlink and up to 150 Mbit/s is available in the uplink.

The Netgear AC785S is optionally operated via a web interface or an app. There is also on the front a color screen, displaying all important information such as reception, battery status and data usage clearly. In the newer models AirCard 790S and AirCard 810S, even a large touch screen was installed, which allows operation without any computer or smartphone app. All functions and settings can be carried out directly on the device, the operation is very easy.


All three MiFi routers have two connections for an external LTE antenna. The external antenna connectors provide possibility to improve the network signal for stable and better surfing experience with areas of weak signal. All three devices feature a removable battery. The Netgear AC810S and the Netgear AC790S even allow you to charge other devices such as smartphones via the microUSB connector of hotspots ( “Jump Boost”).

The DC112A also features four Gigabit LAN ports, one WAN port and connectors for external antennas.

How to Setup Huawei E5186 4G router for Network Connection

  1. Start by inserting your SIM card and connect the power adapter to the Huawei E5186 router. The SIM card must be inserted into the bottom of the router. The power adapter should connect to the back of the router.
  2. You must connect the router to your computer via the wireless network (Wi-Fi). You will find the router’s name and network code on the label which is printed at the back of the router.
  3. Once connected, open your internet browser (eg Internet Explorer or Safari) and in the address bar, type the router’s address Go to the address.
  4. Select the tab “Settings” and log on. The username is admin and the password is admin. You can also find both the router’s address, user name and password on the label in the router.
  5. The router will ask you to change your password when you log in. Skip this since your router is already ensured with a unique network code that you entered earlier in order to connect to the router. Close  the message.
  6. Select the tab to the left called Quick Setup. You will now be guided through the setup of your router.
  7. Once you have completed the quick setup, the Huawei E5186 router will be connected with the internet for surfing on the web.

How to update the firmware of Huawei E5786

Huawei E5786 is world’s first LTE mobile hotspot with LTE Advanced Cat6 and WLAN ac, and it’s one of the fastest mobile LTE router on the market. Thanks to good facilities and powerful battery, Huawei E5786 is popular with many users. However, there is also a small problem with the device, which annoys some users recently.

Huawei has announced the E5786 in February 2014 with the so-called WiFi Extender feature, a feature that we already know from many other Huawei MiFi routers. However, Huawei provides the appliance with different firmware versions, in which some of the WiFi Extender is disabled. In this article, I want to show how to flash the firmware of Huawei E5786 to the version which is equipped with the WiFi Extender.

On some forums, we has found a firmware for the Huawei E5786 LTE router, a user who has already integrated the WiFi Extender function. The firmware should be OK with both the original Huawei E5786 and the unit from Germany Telekom (Telekom Speedbox LTE mini II ), at least there are already reports from users who have their device successfully updated to version 21.303.07.00.00. If one has a E5786 with telecom brand, after the flash, you will get a new firmware with no more branding. Below are the procedure how to update the firmware:



  1. download the Huawei E5786 new firmware zip and unzip all programs on PC
  2. Connect Router with USB cable and at least 10% battery(Better more !!)
  3. Starting the firmware .exe file with admin rights and follow the instructions
  4. also flash GUI. exe

After about 5 minutes of process, the flash should be completed. Some devices may require a Pin code to flash, it can be generated using IMEI number on relevant websites – here you should try Google shortly. I personally have no customized E5786 with telecom brand to test, but in the above linked LTE Forum, there are some opinions that are positive, so I decided to publish the guide here. Nevertheless:

Alcatel One Touch Link Y900 LED Review

Ten years ago, EDGE speed of 400 kbit/s seemed to be the recklessness, but today no surprise on even the possibility of mobile Full HD video. Technology does not lag behind the growing demand: the standard LTE-Advanced is already implemented, allowing you to transfer data twice as fast compared to conventional LTE. One of the best devices the newest standard router Alcatel One Touch Link Y900, which will be discussed in this review.

Alcatel One Touch Link Y900 supports all generations of mobile networks up to LTE-Advanced (or sometimes referred to as the standard 4G +). LTE-A network provides data transfer rates up to 300 Mbit/s, but unfortunately, it’s not yet very common.
